Description
30 Lbs. Heirloom Variety Turkey Red~~Hard Red Winter Wheat Berries. Chemical Free. Condition is "New".This heirloom variety whe
at is grown, harvested and packaged on our farm in Southwest Nebraska. Only the cleaning is done off the farm. We have our wheat tested for molds and toxins by CertifiedLabs®, an independent laboratory. We use our own wheat to bake all our whole wheat breads. Because Turkey Red is not a hybridized variety, it may be easier to digest for people with a gluten intolerance (excluding people with celiac disease) and it will grow true from seed--year after year.
Our wheat is heat sealed in a food-grade mylar bag. We preserve the freshness of our wheat by flushing the oxygen from the bag with food-grade carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is found naturally in the atmosphere and is completely safe. We have used this process for over 20 years and have never had bugs or any type of molds in our wheat.
Turkey Red Wheat was brought to Kansas in the 1870s by German immigrants from the Ukraine. Meanwhile, westward expansion was in full swing in America. These immigrants filled their steamer trunks with the wheat they grew in Russia--Turkey Red. This became the primary wheat variety in America, grown until the mid-1940s, when it was replaced by higher-yielding hybrids. Most of today's hybrid varieties came from Turkey Red. During the time that Turkey Red ruled in the U.S.A.--from 1875 to 1945--Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call and the world went thru a major depression and experienced two world wars.
